This is the Richard Berg Architects web site and project portfolio. Thank you for choosing this method to find out a bit more about us and to see some examples of our work. Much of the architecture that we admire here in our design studio, both historical examples and the work of some of our contemporaries, is deeply rooted in the place that it has been built. Unlike much of the commercial built landscape that we see these days from our car windows, including typical tract houses, we believe that a large part of what differentiates a well-designed building from other buildings of its type is that it fits comfortably in its setting. This “fit” has to do with many aspects of the place—the original, underlying landscape; climate; geology; human history and the existing built environment—being among the most important. It doesn’t mean that we necessarily think a good building will disappear into its environment; quite to the contrary we think that the best buildings have a noticeable visual presence, but even so they look like they have a comfortable relationship with their site and their surroundings. While we are interested in, and have designed projects throughout our wider community, including the Puget Sound basin and throughout the United States, the majority of our work is in our own community of Port Townsend and eastern Jefferson County, Washington. For that reason, we include here a selection of photos of our town, and some of its architectural gems and historic fabric that have influenced our design work. When we design elsewhere, we take the same approach and begin our design process with an exploration of the landscape, climate, and built environment in the project’s vicinity. We hope you enjoy exploring our web site, reading a bit about our philosophy and design influences, and looking at our work. If you have a project you would like to talk over with us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We look forward to talking with you! |
